Hear My Tears

Throughout Scripture, especially in the Psalms, we encounter the phrase “Hear my prayer, O LORD” or “Answer me when I call, O God” or “O LORD, give ear to my cry” or some other similar phrase that expresses a person’s plea for God to hear and intervene in their circumstances. As Alfred Lord Tennyson says, it’s “battering the gates of heaven with storms of prayer.” This battering of the gates of heaven is what we stubbornly refuse to give up praying about even when the weeks and months and years go by with no seeming answer from God. It’s what we hound God about with unceasing cries and tears, storming heaven with our pleas that He hear and respond.

We have all likely been in this place of pleading before God, and know how exhausting and discouraging it can be. Heaven seems so silent to our prayers and cries, and our tears seem like such a wasted effort. But the great thing about God is that even when we can’t give voice to our cries, He hears our tears. When we are too weary and discouraged to pray anymore, and our tears are all we have left, we can be certain that God hears the tears of our pain and anguish. When “Hear my tears, O God!” is the only prayer we have left, this is enough for the God of the universe to meet us in our brokenness.

When the darkness overwhelms…God hears your tears. When no words can express your anguish of soul…God hears your tears. When you have prayed long and hard and heaven remains silent…God hears your tears. When you don’t know what to pray anymore…God hears your tears. When you don’t have any strength left to pray…God hears your tears. When all you have left to offer God is your brokenness and pain…God hears your tears. So let your tears be your offering to God, for silent though they be, heaven hears them loud and clear!

Let these words of Scripture encourage you:

“Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears!” (Psalm 39:12a)

“In my distress I called upon the LORD; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.” (Psalm 18:6)

“Blessed be the LORD! For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy. The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.” (Psalm 28:6-7)

Whatever you are battering the gates of heaven about, whatever you are pleading with God about, whatever you are believing God for that only He can do, don’t give up. Don’t let up. Don’t stop hounding God. Don’t stop praying. Don’t stop crying. Don’t stop believing. God hears every prayer, every cry, every tear, and He never grows weary of hearing from us. Never!

“Hear my tears, O God!”

In God’s divine love,

Peggy
